Kiona Kork:
- chp1 - She has long black hair, which she chops off with a knife to make a short, jaggedy hairstyle. She is on the butte from which she can see both Blackridge and Eden's Drift. It is a "place of transition" to "her people" as her mother told her. She has done something to get kicked out of her mother's house, and out of town. She has a knife with her and a pack. She carved the knife grip herself, it has a rusty red stain at the base of the grip. She has a plan to get back in the good graces of her family and town by somehow sabotaging Blackridge and convincing the railroad that is coming to connect to either Blackridge or Eden's Drift.
- chp2 - She leaves the butte and goes to the railroadmen’s camp between Blackridge and Eden’s Drift. She overhears that the railroad will go to the town that is most likely to be able to support the increased business that the trains will bring. Having a bank seems to be the most important feature, Blackridge has one, Eden’s Drift does not. She decides to somehow bring down the Blackridge bank to sabotage the attractiveness of that town to the railroad. She enters Blackridge.
- chp3 - Blackridge seems empty, but she follows the sound of a crowd to the centre of the town, where there is a dais with a hole in it. She finds her old friend Elm, and together they watch as a young man leaps into the hole, a golden codpieced mayor standing on the dais, and a banjoman. The crowd cheers when the man goes in the hole, and something under the ground rumbles and roars.
- chp4 - When the ground around the dias collapses, she runs with Elm into the emerging ship. She watches from a distance in space as other ships escape earth and then the planet explodes.
- chp5 - Escapes on ARK 4, reflects on losing her purpose, unlocks a door, and is captured by guards.
- chp6 - Marched into the breeding floor alongside the group, searched for an escape, and hid behind a machine during the brawl. She was stunned to discover thousands of her own clones, questioned the guard about the operation, spotted the Space Cowboy outside, and ultimately realized they had escaped.
- chp7 - Learns from Edgar that her father’s DNA was used to create Chuggernauts, while her own was needed for research and cloning. She discovers her attacker may still be aboard the ship and learns her destroyed home may actually still exist underground.
- chp8 - She learns that the Eden’s Drift she reaches is a simulation and that the Chuggernauts are created and raised there. She encounters a cloned Mr. Kang, who reveals that her father is the Consortium’s Chief Logistics Officer and a willing participant in their operations. Enraged, Kiona slashes Kang’s throat and then escapes the pursuing Chuggernauts aboard a golden carriage headed toward the real Eden’s Drift.
Kiona's Mom:
- chp1 - She tells Kiona she has to go. She stands smoking at the sink while Kiona packs up and leaves. When Kiona tries to say she's sorry, the mom doesn't say anything or look at her, just smokes and wipes away tears.
Kiona's Dad (Casey Kork):
- chp1 - He is a stagecoach man in Eden's Drift. He has a ginger moustache.
- chp7 - He is recruited by Zefecato to secretly transport materials between cities. He accepts gold and provisions for his family, demanding startup costs be covered, and seals the contract with his blood.
- chp8 - Mr. Kang reveals that he is the Consortium’s Chief Logistics Officer and a fully willing participant in its operations, contradicting Kiona’s belief that he was simply a victim of Zefecato. His whereabouts remain at the real Eden’s Drift, where Kiona is heading to confront him and Zefecato.
Elm:
- chp3 - She is in the crowd on "Willings Day" in Blackridge the day that Kiona arrives. She had been kicked out of Eden's Drift and Kiona (and everyone) had been told she was dead. She seems to have a connection to Sarbonio, the young man who jumps in the hole during the Willings Day rite.
- chp4 - When the ground around the dias collapses, she runs with Kiona into the emerging ship. She watches from a distance in space as other ships escape earth and then the planet explodes.
- chp5 - Watches the ships and warns they are heading toward each other.
- chp6 - Remained silent during the initial march, joked that someone must really like Kiona upon seeing the room full of clones, and asked Kiona what they should do next once the facility was overrun.
- chp7 - Watches the chaos among the Kiona clones and jokes about how unbelievable the sight would seem to the people of Eden. He then joins the group in a moment of silence.
- chp8 - She believes Sarbonio’s apparent death cannot have been meaningless and insists on going to the underground Blackridge. Kiona gives her several dozen Kiona clones for protection, and Elm leaves with them.
Sarbonio Yosant:
- chp3 - A young man who jumps into the hole in the centre of Blackridge during Willings Day. Seems to have a connection with Elm.
The Engineer (Edgar):
- chp4 - He is in the space ship that escapes Blackridge.
- chp5 - Struggles to keep the ship running, explains the ships are linking together, and leads the group toward an exit.
- chp6 - Offered a terrible plan to fight thirty armed guards, cheered on the aliens as they fought the train robot, and made sarcastic commentary throughout the chaos. He ended the chapter optimistic about having no plan for what comes next.
- chp7 - Recognizes Kiona as the coachman’s daughter through her father’s knife. He admits he knew about the Consortium’s plans but worked with them anyway. He explains how Ted gained power in Blackridge and reveals the truth about Kiona’s DNA and her possibly intact home.
- chp8 - He helps Kiona reach Eden’s Drift through the maintenance tunnels and explains that the ruined version of the town is a simulation used to breed Chuggernauts. He is attacked and has his legs crushed by a small Chuggernaut while helping Kiona and the clones escape. He welds the tracks shut to prevent the Chuggernauts from following them to the Eden’s Drift line, allowing the group to escape by carriage.
The Old Woman (Edna):
- chp4 - She is in the space ship that escapes Blackridge. She has a plant.
- chp5 - Cares for her flower, mourns its destruction, tries to save it, and escapes with the group.
- chp6 - Questioned what the guards were breeding on the facility floor, expressed her immediate dislike of a guard's ominous response, and was shocked to see thousands of Kiona clones in glass containers.
- chp8 - After Thomas is left apparently dead, she drops his arm and begins searching his pockets. She remains behind with Thomas’ corpse and the remaining Kiona clones when Kiona and Edgar leave for Eden’s Drift.
The Little Girl (Gina):
- chp4 - She is in the space ship that escapes Blackridge.
- chp5 - Clings to Edna before being captured and killed by a robotic arm.
- chp6 - Marched with the rest of the group through the metal hallway into the breeding floor and remained with them throughout the capture and subsequent alien brawl. I guess somehow she is still alive or not, uh... oops.
The Golden Guard (Thomas Baker):
- chp4 - He is in the space ship that escapes Blackridge.
- chp5 - Suggests they run, destroys a robotic arm, and protects the group's escape.
- chp6 - Rejected Edgar's terrible initial plan to fight thirty guards, pulled Kiona to safety when the battle broke out, watched the train robot fight, and laughed with the group after the clones took control of the facility.
- chp7 - Badly wounded after the battle, he weakly asks for a sandwich before collapsing. A blood-stained stuffed rabbit falls from his bag.
- chp8 - He died. Edna searches his pockets while Kiona and the others decide how to proceed.
Golden-robed old man (Commissioner Zefecato):
- chp5 - He is on the new, connected ship. Assigns the captured survivors to different work and breeding roles.
- chp7 - The Ark Railway Consortium’s commissioner, who plans to exploit Earth. He recruits Casey for transportation, demands a steam train and workers, and plans to operate underground while using deceptive screens to control his servants.
The Aliens:
- chp6 - Crashed through the ceiling, initiated a massive fight with the guards, short-circuited the Ark Railway Association's train robot with a glowing blue object, and urged Kiona's group to run to safety.
The Train Robot (Chuggernaut):
- chp6 - Entered the fight to stop the aliens for trespassing, got insulted, fought back with its railroad arms, and collapsed after being disabled by an alien device.
The Guard:
- chp6 - Taunted the prisoners about the breeding program, proudly boasted about creating thousands of Kiona clones, and made the mistake of making a creepy comment before the enraged clones vaporized him.
The Kiona Clones:
- chp6 - Released themselves from thousands of glass containers, surrounded and eliminated the lead guard, overran the facility, captured the remaining guards, and freed the other prisoners.
- chp8 - Several dozen Kiona clones accompany Elm to the underground Blackridge, while others travel with Kiona and Edgar toward Eden’s Drift. They become frightened when they see the cloned Mr. Kang and later cheer when Kiona attacks him. During the escape, they operate the controls of a golden carriage and help flee the pursuing Chuggernauts.
The Space Cowboy:
- chp6 - Spotted briefly outside the window wearing a cowboy hat and riding a horse-shaped spacecraft among the Ark ships before tipping his hat and disappearing behind an asteroid.
Ted Blackridge:
- chp7 - A wealthy cattleman who agrees to help the Consortium by secretly transporting materials and providing workers. He used their gold, a printing press, and promises of a bank to become mayor of Blackridge.
Mr. Kang:
- chp8 - He is Kiona's neighbour from Eden's Drift. His lower body has been replaced with robotic wheels that run along train tracks, and he works with a clipboard in the Chuggernaut breeding grounds. He admits to collecting Kiona’s blood for Zefecato and reveals that Kiona’s father is the Consortium’s Chief Logistics Officer and a willing participant in its operations. Kiona attacks him with her knife, slashing his throat.
